| Ladysmith Black Mambazo |
| 02.28.05 (9:52 am) [edit] |
|

So last night my Father and I went to go see Ladysmith Black Mabazo. And boy oh boy, I forgot how awesome good music is. You might remember them as the amazing voices on Paul Simon's "Graceland". (If you don't know that CD, go buy it.) These guys kick so much ass it's scary. And they do zulu dances while they perform too. To me, you can totally suck ass at singing but if you can pull off Zulu dances, I'm sold. That shit is awesome. These guys are my new heros.
The traditional music sung by Ladysmith Black Mambazo is called ISICATHAMIYA (Is-Cot-A-Me-Ya). It was born in the mines of South Africa. Black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes and their families. Poorly housed and paid worse, they would entertain themselves after a six-day week by singing songs into the wee hours every Sunday morning. Cothoza Mfana they called themselves, "tip toe guys", referring to the dance steps choreographed so as to not disturb the camp security guards. When miners returned to the homelands, the tradition returned with them. There began a fierce but social competition held regularly and a highlight of everyone's social calendar. The winners were awarded a goat for their efforts and, of course, the adoration of their fans. These competitions are held even today in YMCA assembly halls and church basements throughout "Zululand". For more on these guys, check out their site: http://www.mambazo.com/

| Monkeys riding bikes |
| 02.27.05 (9:58 am) [edit] |
|

To me, life is like being a monkey riding a bike. It's all about trying not to get too distracted, and balance. I haven't posted for a while, my sincerest apologies. I guess the real world has been a huge focus for me lately, and its been hard to find time to escape into my little nerd world. I needed to unplug. Right now I am on an impromptu vacation because my boss took a last minute trip to LA, and I am off work by default. So instead of staying in NYC and putting myself further into debt by living completely outside my means, I decided to fly home for a week and annoy the shit out of my family.
Tonight I'm going to see an awesome band with my father..will report back promptly, as I have absolutely nothing else to do. Plenty of posts to come, monkiacs. I shall return with sheer unbridled stupidity for you all. Stay tuned.

YES, This is a real band. YES, their real name is Monkey. YES, they are probably the best band walking the earth today. You can tell their music is amazing just from their smug expressions and balls to the wall "breaking all the rules" bravado. Could the guy with the glasses be on more coke? He must be the drummer. I bet he can play drums with his thoughts. I bet the whole crew are snizzmasters. Also, peep the guy next to the blonde lady. My eyes could be deceiving me, but it looks like he's got a case of the grope hand..

Nothing makes me feel warmer inside than reading insane ramblings on city walls. I really like proper graf if its done well, but I have a special place in my heart for real, genuine crazy person grafitti. The kind that doesnt even make sense to the person who wrote it. Thats the best. Thanks to Professor Nanda, I have come across a site that is nothing but that. Here is my favorite:

That just sums it all up for me. Check out the collection here: http://www.picturesofwalls.co...

| Iced Out |

Man, it has been really warm the last few days. Good old warmth. I almost got used to it not being Bum killing cold every day. And just when you think the winter is finally over, God goes and proves what a sick old bastard he truly is. He likes to tease you, and then yank the rug out from underneath you. Sick. I can feel old man winter kicking me in the throat already. Time to break out the puffy jacket. Don't get me wrong, I love the cold. But just cold I control. Not the "hey jerk, have a snowstorm on your day off work" kind. In fact, I constantly keep myself cold. I actually have a really bad habit of chewing ice. I've been doing it since I was a little kid, and my parents absolutely hate it, but I can't stop. I can't even drink a glass of refreshing soda without the glass overflowing with ice. Its pretty stupid. But I think of ice as my energy source. It keeps me strong and full of vigor, like energon cubes in transformers. I have even mastered the silent chew, a feat only achieved through decades of devout practice. Well lucky for me, I'm not alone. Check out this forum for ice chewers. Perfect for those of you too ashamed to admit you are addicted, or those who wish to understand those of us with a penchant for the cold gold. Good fun for all. | Catching Wreck in Quebec |
| 02.12.05 (9:48 am) [edit] |
|

This guy has redeemed French Canada from the shame of Celine Dion. His name is MICHEL LAUZIERE, and in his home town of Quebec he is known as Master of "The Unusual". He has performed his one-man stage show on five continents for an estimated 1 billion viewers, and he has definetely made this monkey sit up and take notice with his unique blend of Musical performance and French Canadian freakery. Start with this clip that has been making the rounds on the Intranet superhighway. Money goes horn crazy. Must see. http://www.big-boys.com/artic... And if you are like me, and have just woken up with a case of saturday brain mush and found that completelly enthralling, you gotta watch this highlight reel of his past performances. Watch as he juggles, plays drums with his head, plays bells, rubs glasses and freaks out Super Dave. But the best and weirdiest is towards the end of the video, where he gets all freeky deeky with a giant yellow ballon. O, Canada. http://www.speakers.ca/speake...

| M.I.A. |
| 02.07.05 (2:27 pm) [edit] |

Many of you know I work in music, and occasionally, after being forced to hear crap for what feels like months on end on radio and TV, you hear good stuff poke through. And if there one artist I keep hearing about these days its M.I.A. She's a Sri-Lankan Dancehall artist on XL Records in England. Her dad is a Sri Lankan freedom fighter (translation: instant "street cred") and her music is fueled with British, Sri Lankan, and Carribean influences. All bullshit aside, her music is fucking hot. Mark my words, this girl is about to blow up. Hopefully she won't start doing duets with Nelly when she does. Here is a link to her video "Galang". The art in the video is hot, and I like the way she dances. It's nice to see artists with music that doesn't take itself so bloody serious. I can't get this song out of my head!! http://www.ruben.fm/MIA/

Yes yes, y'all. Friday is here. I'm stupid broke, and i'm bummed out, but I'll just think of this pic of the fantastic rap group "National Fresh League" (yes, that is their real name) and everything will be alright. Aight?! Alright then. Have a good weekend, y'all..

This is Boney M, a 70's disco supergroup. Apparently they were involved in a Milli-Vaniili esque lip synch controversy back in the day. My Mom used to have their records, and I remember being a little recon and thinking this guy was way cooler than Big Bird. And with style like that, you dont really need talent or a musical ability. If I had hair like that, I'd be left speechless every time I looked at myself.

| 1980 Japanese English Sex Talk Book |
| 02.03.05 (10:29 am) [edit] |

Some of these are weird, some funny, all awesome. these are scans from a kick ass Japanese guide to relationships from the 80's with horrific english translations. I think I'm going to try to speak the japanese version of english for a while. It will be funny to see how uncomfortable people get. Next time I meet a nice young lady I'll go "How about that! From behind your ass really looks great!" My face will be receiving a forceful of slapping, I assure you. Oh Japan, how I love you. (funny, but NSFW)
